The West Coast, a wilderness wonderland

The West Coast

Untamed natural wilderness

The West Coast, or “the Coast” as locals call it, is a region of New Zealand’s South Island defined by rivers, rainforests, glaciers, and unique geological formations. Stretching approximately 600 kilometres from north to south, it encompasses diverse landscapes, including mountains, coastal plains, wetlands, and native forests.

The region is home to two major glaciers, Franz Josef and Fox, as well as limestone formations such as the Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki. Numerous rivers, lakes, and gorges provide opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and hiking. Three national parks—Paparoa, Westland Tai Poutini, and Kahurangi—protect a variety of ecosystems, from alpine areas to subtropical rainforests.

The West Coast experiences high rainfall but also consistent sunny periods, contributing to its lush vegetation and vibrant river systems. Its relatively low population density and remote location mean many areas remain largely untouched, providing habitats for native birds, plants, and wildlife.

The region’s towns, including Greymouth, Westport, and Hokitika, reflect a rich history of gold mining, forestry, and Maori settlement. Visitors can explore both well-known landmarks and off-the-beaten-path locations, with activities ranging from bush walks and glacier hikes to coastal exploration.

The West Coast offers a combination of dramatic scenery, protected natural areas, and outdoor recreation, making it one of New Zealand’s most geologically and ecologically diverse regions.

Why we love it

Our favourite activities

Franz Josef Glacier/Waiau

Franz Josef Glacier/Waiau was originally named Victoria, after Queen Victoria of England, geologist Julius Von Haast, renamed it, Franz Josef, after the current Emperor of his homeland, Austria. The Glacier is pale blue/green ice that has retreated and advanced many times over the years. A walk from the carpark to the Glacier terminal will give you some impressive views and an idea of the immense size of the Glacier itself. The township of Franz Josef is a small town based around the tourist and supply trade.

Punakaiki

Punakaiki is the gateway to the dramatic limestone country of the Paparoa National Park. It lies halfway between Greymouth and Westport on one of the most spectacular coastal highways. The Pancake Rocks that Punakaiki is famous for are limestone formations that began forming 30 million years ago. The seabed was raised above sea level by earthquakes to form the coastal cliffs and coastline. The sea, wind and rain have since etched out the soft layers to form the unusual rock formations we see today. When conditions are right, large ocean swells thunder into the caverns beneath the rocks and huge water spouts blast skywards through the blowholes creating a spectacular sight. Activities in the area include canoe adventures, horse trekking, caving and guided walks to name just a few.
