New Zealand FAQs

Do I need a visa to visit New Zealand?

Visitors from visa-waiver countries must request an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) prior to coming to New Zealand.

You may also have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). For more information on the ETA and IVL, visit Immigration New Zealand.

You will only need to apply for a visitor visa if you are not from a visa waiver country. Please refer to the Immigration New Zealand website for more information.

Your passport must be valid for at least one month after departure from New Zealand if your country has consular representation in New Zealand or three months after departure if it does not.

Renting a car is highly recommended to access remote attractions and scenic drives. Public transportation exists in major cities but may be limited elsewhere.

We drive on the left hand side. Road rules here will be different to where you are from and we recommend all visitors have a read of the basic rules for driving in New Zealand before they arrive so they are familiar with them. You can see them outlined here: www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/driving-in-nz/docs/driving-in-nz.pdf. Another good resource can be found here www.drivesafe.org.nz

Absolutely. New Zealand has become increasingly popular especially over summer months when most tourists visit us so it’s best to get your accommodation, activities and cars sorted as early as possible.

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

The best time to visit depends on your interests and ultimately the kind of weather and environment you like:

  • Summer (December to February): The most popular time to visit New Zealand – warm weather, busy (kiwis are on holiday to), perfect for outdoor activities, beaches, sports and festivals.
  • Autumn (March to May): Becoming cooler the closer to May you get but more settled weather usually especially March/April and still daylight savings so light evenings, fewer tourists, beautiful fall foliage emerging and potentially some better deals. A great time to visit.
  • Winter (June to August): Cold, can be wet, few tourists, some of the walks etc are closed during winter months but great for skiing and snowboarding (in the Southern Alps or Ruapehu).
  • Spring (September to November): Blooming flowers and mild/warm weather, ideal for outdoor adventures, less crowds, more space.

The overall weather varies and generally the North Island is warmer and more humid, while the South Island can be cooler, especially in winter. Pack layers and be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially in mountainous areas.

Yes, New Zealand is very safe. Follow standard safety practices, particularly when undertaking outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or adventure sports. We don’t recommend hitchhiking.
