Overview

Thinking of planning a honeymoon in New Zealand? You’ve chosen one of the world’s most romantic destinations. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know: the best time to visit, top destinations and recommended itineraries.

Why Choose New Zealand for Your Honeymoon?

New Zealand offers the perfect honeymoon combination: dramatic landscapes, world-class wine regions, adventure activities, luxury lodges, and warm Kiwi hospitality. Whether you want adrenaline-pumping adventures in Queenstown, romantic stargazing at Lake Tekapo, wine tasting in Marlborough, or relaxing in natural hot pools, New Zealand delivers an unforgettable start to married life.

When is the Best Time for a New Zealand Honeymoon?

The best time for a New Zealand honeymoon is December to February for warm weather and long days, or March to May for stunning autumn colours, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Each season offers unique romantic experiences!

Summer Honeymoons (December – February)

Summer in New Zealand means long, golden days, the sun rises around 6am and sets as late as 9pm, giving you plenty of daylight to make the most of every stop. Temperatures are warm  20-30°C (68-86°F) for swimming, beach days, and outdoor dining well into the evening. Keep in mind it is peak tourist season, so flights and accommodation tend to be pricier and popular experiences book out quickly. We recommend securing your key bookings early, especially over the December–February months.

Autumn Honeymoons (March – May)

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to travel in New Zealand. The landscapes transform particularly in Central Otago, where the gold and copper tones through Arrowtown and the Cardrona Valley are genuinely spectacular! Visitor numbers drop after the summer rush, which means better availability, lower prices on flights and accommodation, and a more relaxed pace at popular spots. Temperatures are comfortable (15-20°C / 59-68°F) for hiking without the summer heat, and the softer light makes for stunning photography.

Winter Honeymoons (June – August)

Winter brings a different kind of magic to New Zealand. The mountains are capped with snow, the air is crisp, and the landscapes take on a dramatic quality that’s hard to beat, particularly across the Southern Alps and Fiordland. It’s prime season for skiing and snowboarding, with world-class fields like Cardrona, The Remarkables, and Mt Hutt all within easy reach of our self-drive routes. Clear winter skies also make this the best time of year for stargazing, especially at the Lake Tekapo Dark Sky Reserve, where the lack of light pollution and cold, dry conditions create some of the most spectacular night skies on earth. Most attractions are quieter, prices are lower, and you’ll often have places to yourself. Just keep in mind that some alpine and mountain roads may close temporarily due to snow or ice, we always check conditions and build flexibility into winter itineraries.

Spring Honeymoons (September – November)

Spring brings New Zealand to life. Wildflowers bloom across the countryside, newborn lambs dot the hillsides, and the days grow noticeably longer as the season builds towards summer. Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park are filled with cherry blossoms and daffodils. It’s a lovely shoulder season, visitor numbers are still manageable, accommodation and flights offer good value before the summer peak, and the warming temperatures  12-18°C (54-64°F) make it ideal for getting outdoors without the crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should we spend in New Zealand for our honeymoon?

We recommend 10-14 days minimum, with 2-3 weeks being ideal. New Zealand is a long journey depending where you are coming from in the world so you’ll want to make the trip worthwhile. With 10-14 days, you can experience highlights of both islands at a relaxed pace. Three weeks allows for deeper exploration and time to relax.

Our recommendation by available time: 7-10 days: Focus on one island (South Island for dramatic scenery). 10-14 days: Both islands, main highlights. 2-3 weeks: Comprehensive experience, no rushing. 3+ weeks: Off-the-beaten-path destinations included.

Should we rent a car or take guided tours?

Both options work well, depending on your preferences:

Self-Drive Advantages: Flexibility to explore at your own pace and stop whenever you want to take in the stunning scenery.

Self-Drive Considerations: New Zealand drives on the LEFT side. Roads are narrow and winding and journey times are longer than expected. There can be limited services between towns.

Guided Tour Advantages: No navigation stress with professional drivers for challenging roads. However, you will be spending your honeymoon with a group rather than just the two of you.

Our Recommendation: Many honeymoon couples prefer a combination – self-drive for some sections, guided experiences for highlights like Milford Sound or wine regions.
