Tongariro, New Zealand's oldest national park
Tongariro
A UNESCO World Heritage area.
Tongariro became New Zealand’s first national park in 1887 and, just over a century later, was awarded dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its cultural significance to Māori and its outstanding natural features. It is one of only three World Heritage sites in New Zealand and the first in the world to receive dual recognition.
Covering 80,000 hectares, the park showcases volcanic wonders including emerald lakes, lava flows, steaming craters, colourful silica terraces, and unique alpine gardens.
Three volcanoes—Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro—mark the southern limits of the Taupō Volcanic Zone, part of the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire. Volcanic activity began around two million years ago and continues today, with Ruapehu and Tongariro among the world’s most active composite volcanoes.
The park is a playground for outdoor adventure. Visitors can hike the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, explore shorter trails through alpine gardens and lava fields, or ski the slopes of Ruapehu during winter.
The Tongariro Crossing is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and geothermal features. Spanning approximately 19.4 kilometers (12 miles), the trail takes hikers through volcanic terrain, past luminous emerald lakes, and stunning mountain vistas. It typically takes 7 to 9 hours to complete. Other activities include mountain biking, rock climbing, and guided tours that combine adventure with cultural insights.
